The Benefits of In-Person Tutoring

Today’s education system is overburdened by a lack of resources. Despite the teacher's best efforts many students are struggling and need more support. When parents look into private tutoring they find two types; online and in person.   “In theory, educational software could be a cheaper alternative. Studies have shown that computerized tutoring systems, where algorithms guide students through lessons tailored to their individual needs, can be effective when kids use them. But kids are tired of learning over screens and the kids who are the most behind at school are the least likely to have the motivation to learn independently this way.” -Jill Barshay, Hechinger Report 1/1/2023

In person tutoring provides students with a connection to a person who cares about them and their learning. Having a tutor’s undivided attention for 60 minutes creates a motivation to be an active participant in their own learning rather than a passive one.

Students require positive reinforcement and immediate feedback to grow. A  “good job” from a computer application is not as meaningful as a  compliment about a specific skill or attempt from someone who is invested in their progress . Working with a trusted adult empowers students with confidence and higher self-esteem which enables them to make learning attempts that seem risky in other environments.

In person tutoring sessions are more engaging because they can be customized to a student’s interests. A fourth grader who loves baseball is more willing to read a passage about an iconic player than they would be about something they have no interest in.

A multi-sensory approach to learning has been proven to be highly effective. An active student with focus issues needs to move freely and activate learning with multi-sensory activities. Handwriting is a big part of that method and is beneficial for all students. Learning through play is another method that has enormous benefits for younger students.

Overall, in person tutoring is more effective than computer based tutoring programs.
